Top 10 fashion trends of 2012

Perhaps I wasn't searching hard enough, but I failed to find a satisfactory article on the top 10 fashion trends of the year - so I decided to create my own. I now present to you, in my own opinion, the top 10 trends of 2012

1. Coloured Denim
'Tis was a year when for the first time, stepping out of the house in hot pink jeans wasn't considered crazy. Many also donned firetruck red, orange and yellow jeans, among other colours. Most prominent however, was wine red and mint green jeans.

2. Ombre
Ombre was probably the strongest trend we've seen this year. Making its debut in Summer, ombre was seen on skirts, shorts, sweaters and even on hair! With its grunge-like appeal, this trend will probably stick around for another season or two!

3. Mullet
Also dubbed as the 'high-low' skirt, this trend, which also appeared around summertime, quickly made it's way into many wadrobes. Commonly made out of chiffon, this flirty skirt was also made in less popular cotton and even glitter versions during fall.

4. Peplum

Basically a tank top or a skirt updated with a dramatic ruffle at the hemline, the trend in mention was a classy ad stylish piece that was suitable for the office. This trend was also welcomed by the Malays, who used to to give a modern twist to the traditional Baju Kurung.

5. Shoulder cut-outs
In a rather conservative year for fashion, this trend, created by Italian luxury label Fendi, showed that you can show some skin and still be conservative at the same time.

6. Chiffon

Chiffon, which is rather sheer, was probably THE material of the year. Sexy without going overboard, chiffon was often donnes in the form of collared sleeveless blouses which came in an array of colours and designs.

7. Galaxy Print
Move aside, leopard print! This year, a more refreshing print dominated the scene. With the dreamy swirls of pink and purple admist a dark backdrop, complete with clusters of stars, what's not to love about it? From shirts to shoes to shorts, this was probably the most DIYed project this year.

8. Embellished Collars
Miu Miu took a spin on the classic white oxford shirt and made it into a statement piece. Soon, every high street label were selling similar pieces, creating a frenzy to get these stylish and work-apropriate pieces in a variety of colours and embellishment designs.

9. Studs and Spikes
Studs and spikes were seen on everything this year - tops, shorts, bags, shoes ans even iPhone cases! They added a bit of character to any assemble, and with its fierce-looking aesthetic, wearers warned others they're not to be messed with.

10. Statement necklaces
This year, costume jewellery was taken to a whole new level and statement pieces were incorporated into everyday wear. With designs ranging from tribal prints to the grunge-like studs and spikes, 2012 made dainty trinklets a thing of the past.
